20 OctoberThe roots of this ancient celebration are vague - some say it's the remnants of a pagan rite intended to scare off the evil spirits of winter, others that it's of Christian origin, in which penitents were whipped around the church and then scoured (washed) in the Clyde.

Whatever the origin, every spring the local kids have a rare tear chasing round St Nicholas's with their paper bundles tied up with string - and have done for generations.
